Introduction to the Hindi School (Vidyaalaya)

Volunteers at various locations taught Hindi in Edmonton since early ‘70s. However, these efforts were personal and changed with teacher, availability of time, material and other resources. So, in 1985, Alberta Hindi Parishad was founded with the main objective to provide regular classes to teach Hindi systematically. First task was to evaluate what was available, how best it could be used, and what needs to be improved. Thus Hindi Vidyaalaya was started in 1987 at the University of Alberta with the help of Professor Emiritus Dr. Ambikeshwar Sharma.

After lengthy deliberations, Alberta Hindi Parishad chose the books prepared by NCERT - Baal Bharti, which are used in the Central school system throughout India, as the basic curriculum to structure the classes. This has been enriched time to time with supplementary material to make the classroom experience valuable and relevant, process still continues. Experienced teachers provide basic training and guidance to the volunteer teachers.

Hindi Vidyaalaya conducts four classes, Level 1 to 4, for children 5 to 15 years old. Introductory class for adults, where basic reading, writing and speaking is taught, followed by a Conversation class, where emphasis is on Hindi speaking, and a class for Grammar.

Students participate in field trips, annual picnic, cultural programs organized by Hindi Parishad - Holi Program, Independence Day Program, Kavi Sammelan and Antakshari.

Students and members are encouraged to submit articles, poems, and short stories for our annual publication MEDHAVINI and newsletter KRITI.

Who funds all these activities?

Members and users of the services offered by Hindi Parishad are the main contributors of the funds. Our teachers volunteer their valuable time (approximately 5 to 6 hours per week for 45 weeks per year) and efforts at no cost (value of $l,500.00 per year at minimum wage). All activities are organized, and managed by the unpaid volunteers.

The University of Alberta in association with Area-Language Studies Committee, Indo-Shastri Institute, provides classrooms for the Vidyaalaya.

Alberta Hindi Parishad is awarded a casino once approximately every two years. Users of the services (i.e. students) and/or parents are expected to volunteer. For furnishing the Hindi Centre, funds were also provided by Wild Rose Foundation. Books in the library are a mix of purchase and donations.
